If you require additional assistance related to your E-mail account, please contact your Technology Support Representative.

 General Information

IUP E-mail Account Creation:

Accounts are automatically provided for all faculty, staff, and students. The format of your IUP e-mail address is username@iup.edu.

Finding your IUP Computer Account and Initial Password:

IUP E-mail usernames and initial computing passwords are obtained through the URSA web site. Instructions are available on the TechZone web site.

E-mail Alias:

As part of the IUP E-mail service, you have the ability to use an E-mail alias. E-mail aliases are automatically created when your account is created and are usually formatted with your first name, a period, and your last name (First.Last@iup.edu).  These aliases are displayed in the IUP on-line directory.  For more information on IUP E-mail alias format and the ability to change your E-mail alias, please refer to the E-mail Alias Information page on the TechZone web site or see the TUC E-mail Alias Project documentation.

IUP E-mail Account Retention:

IUP E-mail accounts are available for IUP students, faculty and staff.  When a student graduates from the university or an employee leaves the university their computer accounts are available for a period of time as determined by the IUP Central Computing Account Retention Procedures.

  • Password Tips

Here are some guidelines to follow when selecting a password:
    • Do not use common words or phrases.
    • Do not use the word "password".
    • Do not use a password that someone might associate with you. Someone could easily guess your password if you choose the names of children, grandchildren, spouses, and pets. Other items to avoid when selecting a password include phone numbers, social security numbers, addresses, initials, and birth dates.
    • Use at least one number in your password. Hackers often use on-line dictionaries. By using a number or special character in your password, you significantly decrease the likelihood of having your password "hacked".
    • Play it safe
      • Do not share your password with others.
      • Do not put your password in writing.

 IUP E-mail Access

IUP E-mail accounts are managed on a cluster of Unix based systems. There are a couple different ways to access to your IUP E-mail account:

The IUP I-Mail Service:

The IUP I-Mail application is part of the suite of services located on the IUP Web Based E-mail Services Page.  It's a quick way to access your IUP E-mail account on any system with a web browser and internet access. Please review the IUP I-Mail On-Line Help Page for more information on using I-Mail.

PC-based Client Application Access:

IUP E-mail access can also be setup using a variety of PC-based client applications such as Outlook Express or Mozilla Thunderbird.

Please make note that the outgoing mail server smtp.iup.edu requires authentication and uses port 587.  For more information, please review the E-mail FAQs on the IUP TechZone web site.

 Finding IUP E-mail Addresses

An easy way to find an IUP E-mail address is to use the IUP Directory Search Page which queries IUP's LDAP server.  This directory search will search for both E-mail addresses and E-mail aliases.  You can select the Find an IUP E-mail Address option from the IUP Web-based E-mail Services page.  For more information and  special tips on finding a certain individual, refer to the Directory Search Page Help.

You can also use IUP's LDAP (directory server) in your E-mail client (ex. Outlook Express 6 or Mozilla Thunderbird).  The directory server does not work with the Microsoft Office's Outlook client.  The IUP LDAP server address is "ldap.iup.edu".  For more information on configuring Outlook Express to use IUP's LDAP server please refer to the IUP LDAP Guide.
